Learn More About Our BTARs Upcoming Projects!
This past month, our two Black Teaching Artists-in-Residence, Lyn Starr and Brittany Trotter, came together over video to discuss their upcoming projects that they have been working on and what they want to present at the end of their residency in August.
The video starts out with Lyn and Brittany introducing themselves and talking about their backgrounds in the music field. Then Lyn talks about his latest project, a hip-hop opera based on the story of “Rumpelstiltskin”. He is also close to releasing his new solo EP called “Projections”. Lyn hopes to release the EP by summer. Brittany is currently working on a tone and technique book for young flute players. In this book rather than using classical music examples, she will be taking riffs from more popular Beyoncé and Lizzo songs so kids are familiar with the music they will be playing.
Brittany talks about how both her and Lyn really focus their work on showing the foundations classical music has in hip-hop. For example, Lyn talks about how phrasing is very similar in classical and hip-hop music. The rappers flow could be another way to look at phrasing. Brittany says one of the biggest parallels she sees between the two genres is the use of motifs.
Brittany and Lyn wrap up the video with a little preview of what they are working on with Brittany playing her flute and Lyn rapping with her. To watch the full video click here and stay tuned for more content from our BTARs in the future!
