A Step Outside of your Musical ‘Comfort Zone’
I was recently scrolling through Facebook, when I came across a video of two teens reacting to Phil Collins- In the Air Tonight.
There was something so pure, refreshing, and hilarious about watching the initial reaction and faces of surprise when they “discovered” that the song was actually a hit (especially when the beat drops at around 3:00 in the song).
Videos such as this are part of an entire YouTube trend of people reacting to music that they wouldn’t normally listen to. Below are a few examples of some other reaction videos of various genres.
These videos just go to show that stepping out of your typical music taste can turn into a positive experience. You may come to find that you are interested in something you would never expect.
These videos are fun to watch, and I’m sure they’d be fun to recreate as well. Music educators; could you incorporate this into a distanced learning assignment for your students? And young musicians; what genre would be a step out of your comfort zone? What aspects of a song draw you to it? What makes a song “good” to you? Have any thoughts on this? Let us know!
